In the heart of rural England in the valley of the Stour, in countryside immortalised in the paintings of Constable and Gainsborough, lies the picturesque medieval market town of Sudbury. Home to wealthy merchants and clothiers since the 15th century and already a prominent centre for silk weaving which still thrives to this day, Sudbury being the nation's largest silk producer.

On this walk you'll visit some key sites around Sudbury to reveal the long tradition of silk weaving in Sudbury Suffolk that stretches back to the 1780’s. Records show that by 1844 there were four silk manufacturers and 600 silk looms and it is still a thriving industry today with five silk weaving companies, Gainsborough Silk Weaving Company, The Humphries Weaving Company, Stephen Walters & Sons, David Walter Fabrics and Vanners Silks.
